CHS Students Attend KSU’s All-State Choir Prep Day

On September 16th, 2017, 12 members of CHS choirs attended All-State Choir Prep Day at Kansas State University with teacher Mrs. McGuffin. The clinic ran from 9 am to 5 pm and was lead by the university’s two co-directors of Choral Studies, Dr. Oppenheim and Dr. Yu-Oppenheim. The purpose of the day was to prepare students for their upcoming district and state honor choir auditions, which will take place in early November.
Throughout the day, the students attended three vigorous preparation clinics, during which they rehearsed their music and discussed the best ways to prepare for their auditions, while interacting with other dedicated students from other high schools in the surrounding area. Student Naliya Contreras (FR), who attended the clinic, said that the most important thing she learned from this experience was “You’re not always going to get accepted in an audition or an opportunity and…you just need to push forward, even though it may not have worked out because it will work out in the future.” Mrs. McGuffin, when asked about what she thought was the most important thing the students could take away from this experience, said that it was “The spiritual side of performing choral music…the emotive part of singing,” adding that she was “very pleased” with how the day had gone.
